Appendicitis in children

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small extension of the bowel in the lower right part of the abdomen. It is the most common abdominal surgical emergency in children.

Warning signs

Abdominal pain that often starts around the navel and moves to the lower right side, with fever, vomiting or loss of appetite. In young children the signs may be less clear.

Diagnosis

It relies on clinical examination, completed if needed by a blood test and an ultrasound. If in doubt, do not wait: see a doctor quickly.

Treatment

Treatment is surgical: the appendix is removed as an emergency. The length of hospital stay depends on the type of appendicitis and the child's progress.

This information is general and does not replace a consultation: every child is assessed individually.

Frequently asked questions

Should I give a painkiller before seeing a doctor?

Ask a doctor before giving any treatment, and do not let the child eat or drink while surgery is possible.

When can my child go back to school?

It depends on the procedure and recovery; it is specified at discharge and at the follow-up consultation.
