Frequently asked questions from parents

Answers to the questions parents most often ask before paediatric surgery. Every situation is discussed individually during the consultation.

At what age can a child be circumcised?

Circumcision can be performed in the first months of life as well as in older children. The most suitable age is decided during the consultation, according to the child's health and the family's wishes. The procedure is quick and carried out under strict hygiene and safety conditions.

Is a hernia in a baby serious?

An inguinal hernia does not heal on its own: surgery is needed and is usually scheduled promptly. Seek urgent care if the lump becomes hard, painful, no longer goes back in, or if the child vomits. An umbilical hernia (at the navel) often closes by itself during the first years; monitoring is usually enough.

What are the signs of appendicitis in children?

Abdominal pain that often starts around the navel and moves to the lower right side, with fever, vomiting or loss of appetite. If in doubt, see a doctor quickly: appendicitis in children is a surgical emergency.

Undescended testicle: when should surgery be done?

When a testicle has not descended into the scrotum, surgery is generally recommended before 18 months of age, ideally around 6 to 12 months. A consultation confirms the diagnosis and determines the right timing.

How can I prepare my child for surgery?

Explain simply what will happen, follow the fasting instructions given at the consultation exactly, and bring your child's health record and a favourite toy or familiar object. Our team supports you at every step.

Is general anaesthesia dangerous for a child?

Anaesthesia is given by an anaesthetist after a pre-anaesthetic consultation that assesses the child's health. In a healthy child, serious complications are very rare. Feel free to ask all your questions during that consultation.
